Months ago, I saw a deal on LivingSocial for fencing lessons that I absolutely had to buy. I purchased another deal for my boyfriend and convinced two other friends to do the same.

Considering I’m a Groupon, LivingSocial, Bloomspot, and every other deal site out there addict, I’d all but forgotten about this deal until recently.  Luckily, I came across it again with 3 weeks left to spare.  I tried emailing the place, the Ronin Fencing Foundation, via their website’s contact form but didn’t hear back from them for a few days.

The next week I decided to go old school and pick up the phone and call them.  I spoke with the wife of the owner who explained to me they had some family issues and was extremely sorry for not getting right back with me.  I told her that three friends and I had purchased their deal and wanted to schedule our beginner’s lesson ASAP.  She said since there were four of us they’d schedule a lesson just for us.  That was nice.

Fast-forward to the day of our lesson, it was a Thursday night at 8:30PM.  The Ronin Fencing Foundation is located at the Boys & Girls Club of Manassas.  If you live in DC or MD, you know Manassas, VA is FAR!!!  It took us about an hour from upper NW, DC.

When we arrived we weren’t sure what to expect because all we were told was to wear stretchy pants, bring a shirt to change into, and bring plenty of water.  We walked in and were introduced to the owner, who quickly got us suited up.  That process was interesting to say the least, I’ll spare you the details but I will say we had a lot of laughs.

We met with our instructor who was fairly young, I’d say 20 at the oldest and he taught us the stances, how to move around and then situated us so we could duel against each other.  It was definitely a workout and we took a lot of breaks during our hour-long session.

The gymnasium where the class was taught was very warm, which wasn’t helped by the fact we had on fencing gear and face masks.  Fortunately, they did tell us to bring a shirt to change into because we desperately needed to once the class was over.

All in all we had a great time and I think all of us agreed we’d do it again, I highly recommend The Ronin Fencing Foundation.  The owner shared with us, that they are also accepting new students and have the best rates in the area.  You can drop in at $20/class or it’s $80/month.

If you feel like trying something new or just want to release some pent-up aggression/energy this is the venue for you. En Garde!
