Last week, I received an invitation to check out one of DC’s newest restaurants, Mastro’s Steakhouse, for their preview party. If you’re not familiar with Mastro’s, you probably know about other restaurants under Landry’s holdings including Morton’s, McCormick & Schmick’s, Chart House, and Bubba Gump, among others.

We arrived to a red carpet which was a nice touch, but once you stepped inside you were transformed into an elegant space that was not at all reminiscent of the previous tenant (M&S Grill). I was excitedly greeted by 2 hostesses and another 4 servers each eagerly trying to hand me a glass of champagne.

Looking up you will find a vibrant orange Chihuly (or Chihuly-like) sculpture hanging from the ceiling. It was truly breathtaking. A few steps away in one of their many dining rooms, there was an ice sculpture featuring the Mastro’s logo along with all of the oysters, crab legs, and prawns you’d could ever imagine. I was in heaven.

After sampling the offerings as well as a number of passed hors d’oeuvres, we ventured downstairs. Once you go down the staircase, there’s a large dining room with a few areas that can be used for private dining and event space. Right now, I’m eyeing one of the smaller rooms for my birthday this summer.

We walked around the corner to find a carving station. Can I just say the peppercorn sauce they had to go with the meats was amazing. Next to the station, there was a dessert bar that featured cheesecake, key lime pie, and the best dessert I’ve had in forever, the warm butter cake. While there were many stand outs from the night, the butter cake was the real MVP. There’s also a bar that’s a little more cozy than the one upstairs.

All in all, we had a fabulous time and the service was impeccable. Currently, they are open for lunch Monday-Friday and dinner daily. I was also told they will have live music during the weekends. Mastro’s is a great new addition to Penn Quarter and I cannot wait to go back for dinner.

Side note, I highly recommend joining the Landry’s Select Club. Unfortunately, you don’t earn rewards on dining at Mastro’s but they have 20+ restaurants where you can.
